I focus a little more on the chapter books/book series, because I’ve found it’s helpful to have recommendations for books that your kid is going to read independently. When my kids were very young and we’d go to the library to pick books, I could flip through picture books quickly to see if I liked them. However, once you get into chapter books, they are obviously longer and that’s not an option. I often read a couple pages to get the feel for it, but once your kid’s reading starts to take off, you probably won’t get the chance to pre-read any of the books.
So, I’ve listed some series that I have either read with the kids, or the kids have enjoyed solo. Or, a lot of times, I’ve started reading a book in the series to the kids, and then they finish the book or start the next book on their own. Which is actually a great way to get your kid into a book they may not think they’d like.
And I’ll add that while this tip may be obvious, the best way I’ve found great new books for my kids is by asking children’s librarians.
This page focuses on Short Chapter Books, but take a look at my Picture Books, Early Reader, Longer Chapter Books, and Magazine pages.
Below the list, I included a link to the same book list in my Bookshop.org shop. Every purchase at Bookshop.org directly supports independent bookstores, which I think is pretty cool!
Short Chapter Books
Nate the Great by Marjorie Weinman Sharmat
Dragon Masters series by Tracey West
Diary of a Pug books by Kyla May
Magic Tree House Books by Mary Pop Osbourne. These books are great and there are SO many. They often contain info about history, animals, etc. She also writes Merlin Missions with the same characters. These are slightly longer, but still pretty short. And she writes Fact Tracker books, nonfiction companion books with facts that related to each mission. We love all of them!
The Princess and Black series by Shannon & Dean Hale. These are great first chapter books. Short chapters, lots of pictures.
Haggis and Tank books by Jessica Young
Owl Diaries by Rebecca Elliott
Isadora Moon series by Harriet Muncaster. The protagonist is half fairy half vampire, and the illustrations are so neat.
Press Start! Books by Thomas Flintham. Books about video game characters that mesh comics with prose.
The Binder of Doom and Notebook of Doom series by Troy Cummings
The Last Firehawk series by Katrina Charman
Pixie Tricks by Tracey West
Time Jumpers by Wendy Mass
Zoey and Sassafras books by Asia Citro. These are fun books that also teach about science.
Moongobble and Me books by Bruce Coville
The Data Set series by Ada Hopper. These books feature kids who love science, so you get a side of science with the fun.
Mia Mayhem by Kara West
Ivy & Bean by Annie Barrows
Junie B. Jones books by Barbara Park. I don’t like that Junie uses incorrect grammar and made up words sometimes, but these books are sweet and made my kids laugh. I’d always make sure to tell them the correct word/grammar when reading it with them ;)
A to Z Mysteries by Ron Roy. I really like these books, plus each illustration has a letter hidden that ends up spelling the solution. So fun! Also check out the A to Z Mysteries Super Edition books too.
Calendar Mysteries by Ron Roy. The younger siblings of the original crew. These books are slightly easier/shorter.
Weird School Books by Dan Gutman: Honestly, I don’t love these books. But I love how hard they make my kids laugh.
Unicorn Academy books by Julie Sykes.
